Chocolate Creative Calderdale

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Recently had the honour of designing the next event invite for Creative Calderdale.

The main speaker at the next event is Mark Palmer – the man behind the brand success of Green & Black’s chocolate.

Therefore, for the design of the invite, we decided to go down the route of replicating a Green & Black’s chocolate bar wrapper . Seemed like the most logical thing to do really.

The Creative Calderdale event is being held at Todmorden Town Hall on Tuesday 18th January 2011. The events starts at 6pm. Contact Hannah at Creative Calderdale for more information.

Smashing, great… SUPER!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Each month I ‘art direct’ an internet marketeer’s newsletter/magazine called Marketing Dot Com. When I say ‘art direct’, this is actually a fancy way of saying I design the content of the magazine.

How it goes is the magazine editor provides me with all the articles and I design/typeset them for the magazine – this includes sourcing any relevant imagery to accompany the articles.

More often than not, I like to produce these images myself, whether it be simple pen & ink drawings, crisp vector artwork or full-blown Photoshop and 3D renderings.

This month, the main article (which is carried on to the front cover) is about becoming a Super Affiliate. The editor and I decided to go down the route of using superhero-esque imagery for the article and cover, something really bold and vibrant. Seen as though I’m a proper comic book nerd, this is was a brief I really wanted to have a good go at. I certainly have lot of graphic knowledge to call on in this field.

While I was producing the cover ideas in Photoshop, it inspired me to produce a piece of artwork for myself. A self-promotional, experimental piece if you will. Personally, I think this would work really well as a large screen print.

Optimist v Pessimist

Illustration I created for an article in the November issue of MDC (Marketing Dot Com newsletter)

In case you are wondering, this illustration is created the ‘old school’ way i.e. doodled out on paper using pencil, then fibre tip pen and then scanned in.

Always, always backup

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Thankfully, I’m pretty geeky when it comes to backing up my digital files – but I haven’t always been.

Like most people, I became a diligent ‘backer-upper’ only after I’d accidentally deleted some files that weren’t backed up. Arghh!

Creative Calderdale

In the their own words…

“ The Creative Calderdale website is a complete online resource for creativity here in Calderdale. By registering details with the secure online facility members become part of our searchable database and facilities map, as well as being invited to fantastic networking events and getting the opportunity to browse forthcoming invitations to tender, jobs and work being commissioned, our members also receive our regular newsletters and updates.

The Creative Calderdale project, funded by Calderdale Council and managed by the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, aims to undertake the development and operation of a digital and creative industry network across Calderdale to encourage the start-up of new businesses in the sector, attract inward investment, and improve competitiveness of local digital and creative industries.”

For their next scheduled networking meet-up, Creative Calderdale have hit the jackpot by landing Patrick Burgoyne (editor, Creative Review) as the main speaker. Pretty impressive.

I was recently given the opportunity to design the invite for this event and it was agreed that the invite should, in some way, be a homage to the newly designed identity that appears on the cover of Creative Review.

Stupidly, had a bit of a nasty fall off my mountain bike last week and used my shoulder as a crash mat!! Still suffering now over a week later.

Felt like sharing my pain, graphically of course.
